DISCOVER THE DIFFERENCES
PPL, PVC or PAPER?
The adhesive tape industry is not as simple as you might think: the evolution of materials and their properties have given rise to countless products to meet the varied demands of increasingly demanding end users such as industries and professionals. The adhesive packing tape is perhaps the most difficult to choose, as there are many physical and technical characteristics that differentiate it according to its use. It is usually generalised to ask for a standard adhesive tape, the brown scotch tape for closing boxes that is easy to find everywhere, from supermarkets to hardware stores, without taking into account that adhesive tapes should be selected and used according to their technical characteristics such as: adhesiveness, thickness, resistance to high and low temperatures and storage mode.

TAPE CATEGORIES
SUPPORTS USED
The main structure of the adhesive tape is its backing, which can be made of many materials: polypropylene, paper, etc. The weight and formula of the adhesive depend on the application for which the tape is going to be used.
There are mainly three substrates used in these two categories of tape: PPL, PVC and paper.
ADHESIVE TAPE IN
PVC
PVC adhesive tape is useful for heavy packages, but it is very sensitive to temperature changes, cold can easily split it.
It is easy to cut by hand and leaves no residue on smooth surfaces, such as furniture or glass, which is why it is so popular with movers.
ADHESIVE TAPE IN
PPL
PPL adhesive tape is cheaper and, depending on its thickness, extremely strong and elastic. It is also used for printing.
PPL adhesive tape can be coated with three types of adhesive: solvent, acrylic and hot melt.

QUALITY ADHESIVE TAPES
COMPOSITION OF TAPE
THE ADHESIVE
The adhesive is fundamental to the substrate as it is spread on it and gives it the main quality for its use: adhesiveness. There are two categories of packaging tape: the acrylic adhesive and the rubber adhesive.
ACRYLIC ADHESIVE A
WATER BASED
Ideal for permanent and outdoor applications.
ADVANTAGES
- Good adhesion to surfaces such as glass and metals, PET and plastics in general
- Resistant to high temperatures
- Resistant to ageing, weathering and environmental influences
- Slip resistant even at high temperatures.
LIMITS
- Maximum adhesion is only achieved after a defined stabilisation time, so until then the tape can be repositioned.
- Rather low immediate adhesiveness

RUBBER
ADHESIVE
These adhesives, both natural and synthetic rubber, are ideal for more general applications.
NATURAL RUBBER
It is made from natural polymers and is often referred to as "Solvent Adhesive". It is an extremely stable adhesive, leaves no residue on painted surfaces and is sensitive to sunlight.
SYNTHETIC RUBBER
Made from synthetic polymers, it is thermoplastic, and is often referred to as "hot melt adhesive". It is a general-purpose adhesive, so it is also fairly inexpensive and extremely sensitive to heat and sunlight.
ADVANTAGES
- High initial tack
- Excellent adhesion on surfaces such as PP, PE or EPDM
- More economical than acrylic adhesives
LIMITS
- Lower temperature resistance
- Low resistance to ageing, chemicals and humidity.
In this family, the one with the greatest resistance to temperature is natural rubber, which is used for packaging tapes that must close boxes in cold environments.
FOR THE CHOICE OF SCOTCH
INDISPENSABLE ADVICE
Whether you're looking for classic adhesive tapes made with cutting-edge materials and techniques, or a customised product created specifically for your company, our staff can suggest the best solution for your business and help you make it happen.
To make sure you choose the ideal adhesive tape, you should consider the following factors:
TYPE OF
BACKING
How much weight will the tape have to bear?
TYPE OF
ADHESIVE
Natural rubber, hot melt or acrylic?
APPLICATION AND TEMPERATURE
How will it be applied? At what temperature?
SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS
Roughness, homogeneity, composition, etc.
FINAL CONDITIONS OF USE
Temperature, UV exposure, environmental factors, etc.
WEIGHT OF
BOX
If you have heavy boxes we recommend a higher than standard thickness of at least 32-35my, either with PPL or PVC backing. If the box is light, a hot melt adhesive tape will suffice, without any particular performance, but cheaper and suitable for standard use.
APPLICATION TEMPERATURE
It is necessary to know the precise application temperature. If the tape is applied at too low or too high temperature, it may break during unwinding and the adhesive glue may be damaged and not react as desired.
TYPE OF
CARDBOARD
Knowing the application surface, remanufactured or pure board have different characteristics and the adhesive reacts differently on these surfaces. Each material requires a different, specific tape so that the adhesive works at its best.
TYPE OF
STORAGE
If the goods are to be stored for a long time, we recommend adhesive tape with natural rubber or acrylic adhesive. It is important to know the storage temperatures to prevent the adhesive from losing its properties and becoming less efficient.
ADHESIVE PACKING TAPE
HOW TO APPLY AND HOW STORAGE
In general, the optimum application of adhesive tape is at room temperature and the board must be clean and dry. Once applied, the tape withstands well the conditions normally found in transport and storage, including severe cold.
To ensure the best standard, limit storage to 6 months and use FIFO (First In First Out) rule for stock rotation. If possible, store between 14 and 28°C. If stored at lower temperatures, reprocess at room temperature before use to ensure optimum performance. Avoid excessively humid environments, temperature fluctuations and direct exposure to light and heat sources.
